How to Get the Transcript of a YouTube Video (3 Methods, 2026)

Three ways to get a YouTube transcript — YouTube's built-in panel, a free transcript generator, and AI transcription for videos without captions — with their limits.

Most people need the text of a YouTube video for one of three reasons: to quote it, to study it, or to turn it into something else (an article, notes, subtitles). Here are the three methods that actually work, from the most basic to the most complete.

Method 1 — YouTube's own transcript panel

On desktop, open the video, click the “…more” link under the description, then Show transcript. A panel appears on the right with time-coded lines. You can toggle timestamps off and copy the text manually.

Limits: copying is clumsy (you must select the whole panel), there is no search, no export, no paragraphs, and the feature is missing on many mobile devices.

Method 2 — A free YouTube transcript generator

Paste the video URL into a tool such as Retranscrit. It reads the captions YouTube already publishes (manual or auto-generated) and shows them as a clean, searchable transcript with clickable timestamps. You can copy everything in one click or download TXT, SRT or VTT.

Why it is instant and free: no audio is processed. The captions already exist; the tool just presents them well. That is also why it respects YouTube's rules: nothing is downloaded.

Limits: it only works when the video has captions. Around 80–90% of popular videos do, but private, very recent or music-only videos may not.

Method 3 — AI transcription when there are no captions

If the video has no captions, you need speech recognition. Export or record the audio you have the rights to, then upload the MP3 or MP4 to an AI transcriber. Modern Whisper-class models reach 95%+ accuracy on clear speech, detect the language automatically and add punctuation.

Limits: it takes a minute or two per 10 minutes of audio, and free tiers cap the monthly minutes (Retranscrit gives 30 minutes a month for free).

Going further

Once you have the transcript, the real value starts: generate a summary with timestamps, split the video into chapters, translate it, or ask it questions. Those are the AI tools built into the transcript view on Retranscrit — the first three summaries are free.
